grandfathers as witnesses
« on: Friday 02 March 18 06:45 GMT (UK) »
On a few Parish Records for births I have in the early 1800s, the two witnesses appear to be the fathers of the two parents. Did this happen much, or is this just coincidence?
Thanks, Rob

It certainly happened in the fishing ports when the father was away at the fishing. One of my ancestors was sometimes absent "at the Davis Straits whale-fishing" and the grandfather would stand sponsor for the child.
