Help finding more info on relative librarian in Cork in 1880s

Hi there

My great, great grandfather Miles Murphy left the army in 1877 in Dinapore India and reappears living in  Leitrim Street in Cork in 1879 (on child's baptism record). In 1882 he appears on his daughter's marriage certificate as a librarian.

I wonder where I could find confirmation that this was his job, what he actually did and where he worked. Was a librarian a well-paid job? What was leitrim Street like to live in? Was he relatively well off or not? He was a private in the army but must have been a good reader and writer to do this job. I have never found his date of birth or death either. His army records are very unclear and mention places I have never found.

Any ideas where to look next?

Hi Liz, have you ever watched "Red Bull Soap Box Race"
It was in Cork City a couple of years ago.
When they come to the finish line, as you look up St Patrick's Hill where the start was, 2nd road up on the left is Coburg Street, this bends around into Leitrim Street. Still a few big houses, shops etc, then it leads into Leitrim Street Industrial estate.
The Library is on the Grande Parade. About turn from St Patrick's Hill cross the bridge over the River Lee, you will be on the Grand Parade I think the Library is on the left.

On Jane’s marriage he was a Labourer so he may have taken any job that was going at the time
