If that is in Macclesfield it certainly was a pub. According to the Post Office Directory for 1857 the publican was a T Strawbridge.

Yes it was T Strawbridge.

But I don't know anything other than the listing.

Hopefully someone will be able to help.

It would be nice to know the obvious, is the building still there and what is it called now.

It just says Cheshire, would it definitely be Macclesfield?

In the Cheshire Post Ofice Directory 1857 found on

http://cheshiredirectories.manuscripteye.com

There are two entries for pubs called the Punch Bowl. One is in Howlake, Birkenhead and the other is in Market Place, Macclesfield.

The fact that you have found one in Market Place in 1855 and I have found one in Market Place in 1857 is a bit too much of a coincidence for it not to be the same pub, don't you think.

Great link, thanks.

In the listing from your link it says Macclesfield. The listing I looked at only said Cheshire.

So I am now clear on where the punch bowl was or is.

I don't suppose you would know where the actual building is / was, or if anyone is familiar with the area would they be able to tell me?

Thanks again.

The Punch Bowl was in the vicinity of Unicorn Gateway, probably on the corner of Market Place and Union Gateway. I have seen the address written as Union Gateway in one directory*. Looking at the censuses it seems to have been next to the Union Inn and very close to the Unicorn Inn.

* In Morris's 1874 Cheshire Directory there is this Macclesfield listing:

Morton Harry, "Punch Bowl" inn, Union Gateway, Market place

Thanks ShaunJ

What is on the site of the Punch Bowl today? And what would be or is it's current address?

It would have been where Macclesfield Town Hall now stands.

Here is the Town Hall on Google Streetview https://goo.gl/mcuap1

Unicorn Gateway is the street on the left. Market Place continues straight ahead.
