Thank you both so much, i couldn't see the wood for the trees and was concentrating too much on finding the marriage of John Curtis and Ellen.  I think there is enough corroborating evidence for Ellen to be Eleanor Broughton and I shall add this info to my tree.

Looks as though Mary Ann Plummer had questionable parenting skills!  She had an illegitimate son, my gt gt grandfather Levi when she was 17.  Levi was brought up by his grandparents and never knew who his father was, twelve years later she had Maud who was raised by her aunt Ellen/Eleanor.  On a brighter note, she was living with Maud when she died in 1891.
