Thomas MacDonald (abt1892-1967)
« on: Saturday 03 March 18 23:39 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I'm hoping to find any information on my great grandfather Thomas MacDonald.
He was a Machinist who worked for Firestone in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
Some people in my family say he came over with his family from Scotland when he was a boy and others claim he was much older and met his wife on the boat coming over.
He served in Canada's 19th infantry battalion and fought and was wounded in the battle of Somme. His wifes name was Jean but all I know about the last name is that it was short..... very helpful I know. She was also much younger than him, at least 15 years.
He was a member of many choirs including a Welsh choir which competed in Utica, NY where they came in second.
He said that he traveled the world going to North and South Africa, China, Japan and other countries surrounding the Mediterranean.
They were very much Catholic 4 boys and 2 girls.
Cecelia Mary MacDonald(also went by Sheila) 1931 - 1985
Dennis MacDonald
Marylou MacDonald
Patrick MacDonald
Harry MacDonald
Thomas MacDonald
This is unfortunately all that my family collectively knows so if anyone could shed some light on this I would be incredibly grateful.
Thanks in advance!
Trevor

Hi Trevor do you have your great grandfathers army record or his death record which should hopefully give you the names of his parents
Also what about Shelia's death record does this give her mums maiden name

There were over 40 Thomas and over 30 Thomas with a middle name born about 1892

Have you considered
http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/military-heritage/first-world-war/personnel-records/Pages/item.aspx?IdNumber=149961

There are lots of other records of WW1 Canadian military personnel on the Libraries Canada web site.

Can you find a birth or baptism for any of the children that would lead you to Jean's maiden name and then to the marriage certificate?

What about a death certificate? It should name his parents.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

I was just looking at your suggestions, Forfarian.

Couldn't easily see Thomas in the 19th Reg Nominal Rolls of 1915 https://militaryandfamilyhistory.blog/2016/04/18/nominal-rolls-of-the-canadian-expeditionary-force/

There is a death of a 2yr old girl in Hamilton in 1933, Jean Margaret. Residence 155 Cameron Avenue. Her parents show as Thomas MacDonald and Jean McFall. Father born in England and mother in Scotland.

Little Jean Margaret was buried at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, a RC cemetery  www.thecatholiccemeteries.ca/cemeteries/holy-sepulchre/find-a-grave

A possible entry?

The other option is contact the OGS Hamilton Branch https://hamilton.ogs.on.ca they have considerable local resources as does the Hamilton Library (Central Branch) http://lha.hpl.ca

Firestone Employees, had their own association for retired employees.  No idea if it is still around as the plant closed in '87.
