Think it says Stricture of Urethra for 10 days - poor man must have been in agony!!

I don't know how familiar doctors were with prostate problems in 1895 or this guy's doctor was so the inability to pass water could have been caused by prostate cancer or benign prostatic hyperplasia.  The secondary effect would have been kidney failure and other infections such as sepsis, the guy would definitely have been in agony and probably severely dehydrated by the fear that drinking would increase the agony.  Hope the doctor was able to dose him up with laudanum, if the guy could afford it that is.

Surprising that the doctor didn't catheterise him, if I remember correctly Dr Johnson of diary fame had that procedure and recorded it in his diary.  At his time the treatment was as painful almost as the condition.

But if there was a structure of the urethra, it might not have been possible to pass a catheter.
