Robert O'Mahony
« on: Sunday 04 March 18 06:59 GMT (UK) »
Kia Ora,
I having been trying to locate the family of Robert O'Mahony, born on 14 April either 1831 or 1833.  Robert was born in the city of Cork, or so his headstone states, he left there when he was 15 and sailed around the world, settling finally in Tasmania, Australia where he married Mary O'Brien from ?Limmerick in July 1855, he 25 she 20.  They stayed here and had five children and Robert worked as a Policeman, water and rural.  Around 1877 they left Tasmania and headed to New Zealand, settling in Timaru where they are both buried.  I would appreciate any assistance/advice re this as I have spent a number of years trying to solve this mystery, with no luck, so far. Also I would really love to establish some background on Mary, her father was John O'Brien, her mother Catherine, nee Normoyle.
Sincere thanks.
RM

Hi,

As your Robert was born around 1830 it is difficult to find a birth record for him as civil registration in Ireland for births only started in 1865.

I had a look at a free site for church and civil records www.irishgenealogy.ie  and found a baptism for a "Robt Mahony"  born 9th September 1829 in the Bandon Registration district.  Link here -

https://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/0f72ee0014908?b=https%3A%2F%2Fchurchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie%2Fchurchrecords%2Fsearch.jsp%3Fname2fm%3D%26name2l%3D%26namefm%3Drobert%26namel%3Do%2Bmahony%26location%3D%26yyfrom%3D1825%26yyto%3D1835%26submit%3DSearch%26sort%3D%26pageSize%3D100%26diocese%3D%26parish%3D%26century%3D%26decade%3D%26ddBfrom%3D%26ddMfrom%3D%26ddDfrom%3D%26mmBfrom%3D%26mmMfrom%3D%26mmDfrom%3D%26yyBfrom%3D%26yyMfrom%3D%26yyDfrom%3D%26ddBto%3D%26ddMto%3D%26ddDto%3D%26mmBto%3D%26mmMto%3D%26mmDto%3D%26yyBto%3D%26yyMto%3D%26yyDto%3D%26locationB%3D%26locationM%3D%26locationD%3D%26member0%3D%26member1%3D%26member2%3D%26member3%3D%26member4%3D%26member5%3D%26member6%3D%26member7%3D%26member8%3D%26member9%3D%26namef0%3D%26namef1%3D%26namef2%3D%26namef3%3D%26namef4%3D%26namef5%3D%26namef6%3D%26namef7%3D%26namef8%3D%26namef9%3D%26namel0%3D%26namel1%3D%26namel2%3D%26namel3%3D%26namel4%3D%26namel5%3D%26namel6%3D%26namel7%3D%26namel8%3D%26namel9%3D%26keyword%3D%26event%3D

As you don't have his parents names it is very difficult to say if this is your Robert or not.
He is listed as Robert Mahony ( often people would drop the O).   Father for this Robert was Jerh
( Jeremiah) Mahony and mother was Jane Fitzgerald.  The sponsors were Thomas Harris and Margaret Casey.

Bandon is a town in West Cork about 18 miles from Cork City.   Bandon is the registration district but this area includes a wide area around Bandon.

Ireland in the 1800's had naming patterns when choosing a name for a child -  see attached to give you an idea -

http://www.ballyd.com/results/namingpatterns.htm

First son named after father's father
Third daughter named after mother  - if he had children was his eldest daughter named "Jane".

You really have no way of confirming if this is your "Robert" although his birth year is close to
the 1830 ( based on his age at marriage in 1855).

Many church records from the 1800's are not available as they were burned in a fire.  Some church records from County Cork may not have been added to this site.

Have a look at the www.irishgenealogy.ie site.

Good luck with the search it will be a difficult one unless some relations of Robert's still live in Cork and know of their ancestor who emigrated to Australia.

Big thank you to Mary and Gaffy for all your hard work and assistance.  Mary, I don't think that is my Robert as it does say on his headstone that he was born in the city of Cork and his birth day is 14 April.  I see you are from Allihies, it is such a lovely place.  I had a friend who lived in Castletownbearre (spelling!!) and I was lucky to spend some time there.
Gaffy, great work on the O'Briens, its just great to get all these connections.  Our peoples all left this behind them and we were too young to ask the questions and its so difficult to piece it all together, so you and Mary are truly special to assist people like myself as we try to unlock our forebears stories.
Best wishes to you both and I hope you have a happy Easter.

Hi Reta,

You are welcome.  I'm sorry that this Robert is not the correct one.

Next time I am in the county library I will have a look at the church records for St. Mary & St. Ann
( Cork's North Cathedral (R.C.) to see if any Robert O'Mahony in them.

All the best

Mary
