There was a 30 Union Street, Bishopwearmouth. Union Street was between 236 & 237 High Street.

Many thanks for all the information Stan & justmej.

I have looked at Union St South Hylton and feel it must have been the one in Bishopwearmouth he was living as an address of convenience at the time of his marriage as the one in Sth Hylton just seemed to be one or two houses as you seemed to think Stan. But worth a bit of research before making a decision.

Thanks
Judy

Just a follow up to my 2x Gt Grandfather living in Union Street at the time of his marriage.

He was a Shipwright so could Union Street have been near any of the Shipyards where he could have  worked does anyone know?

Also does anyone know of an old map with High St & Union St named. I can find old OS maps where the streets aren't named.

Many thanks.

You can Union Street on this map https://maps.nls.uk/view/120934737#zoom=4&lat=6067&lon=10636&layers=BT it was not far from the river, it depends on when and where your  2x Gt Grandfather worked.

You cannot get an old OS map that does not show street names, where have you looked?.

You can see a map of the Wear shipyards at https://www.gracesguide.co.uk/Sunderland_Shipyards

Thank you for the reply and information Stan.
Think I can only say not looking in the right place or the right place on that web site to find the map with street names.

I don't know where he worked as far as I know he  was born, lived, worked and died in South Hylton apart from when he married, when he was at 30 Union St and oddly in the 1861 Census he was said to be a visitor in the household of John Peatfield, Chatham Kent.

He lived at 30 Union St. Wonder if it was some sort of lodging house.

30 Union Street was a tenement house with two families in 1851,1861, and 1871, not a lodging house.
