John Weir Born about1812 in Ireland

Searching for John Weir Born about1812 in Ireland.

We believe he arrived in Canada before 1840.  His religion was listed as Presbyterian on census documents.

He married Margaret Jane Ann Talbot 16 Oct 1840 in London, ON Canada  We believe Margaret Jane Ann was born 20 JUL 1820 in Ireland.  Her religion was listed as Methodist. She passed 17 AUG 1899  London, Middlesex, Ontario, Canada.

We have been unable to find a death for John Weir.  Some online trees list death before 1901 but no supporting documents.

There is a 1901 census that has a John and Margaret Weir with about right ages but location does not fit as they are on opposite side of Province in Hastings County.

We know of the following children:

Samuel Weir 1847–1920

John Weir Jr. 1849–1901

Agnes Weir 1850–1926

Margaret J. Weir 1855–1908

Richard Weir 1857–1930

Robert Weir 1857–1932

George Weir 1861–1933

William Weir 1862–1906

James Weir 1862–1936

Did you find the family in the 1881 or 1891 Census?

We find John and Jane in the 1881 census with the following children
Robert Weir 24
James Weir 21
George Weir 19
William Weir 17
Agnes Weir 28
Margaret Weir 26

They are in Middlesex county near London, ON

Son John appears with his wife and kids in the 1891 census.  Son Samuel is on same census and living close by.  The families are side by side on the census document.
Daughter Margaret appears in 1891 as well, with her husband and kids.

It seems we find a number of the family in the 1891 census but not John Weir Senior.  Perhaps he passed before the 1891 census?  He would have been 79 or so in 1891.

Jane Ann Weir's death record from 1899 shows "married"

I deleted a few remarks.....I wasn't reading the particular record I commented about correctly.

I haven't been able to find a death for John in Ontario either. Did any of his children move to the US? Might he have gone there to live after the death of his wife (assuming the death record is correct) and thus died there?

His son Richard went to California as best we can tell.  Likely around 1890.  He married a Sarah Jane Heck December 28, 1882  in Oxford County.  Richard was listed as living in London, ON at time of marriage.

All others seem to have stayed in Canada.  However, other branches of my tree were in Michigan , usually for railroad work.

Where is Jane buried?  John not buried with her?  You might look for a will for John.  Available on microfilm at the Ontario Archives:

I don't know if you have seen this map?

http://www.historicmapworks.com/Map/CA/776/London+Township/Middlesex+County+1878+Copy+2/Ontario/

Part way down the right hand edge you can see what is probably the land of Samual and John beside each other and a second John further down. If you move to the left a little from Samuel and up a bit you will see the little town of Birr. There is a cemetery there.

I don't know if you have looked for burials on this website? A John and Jane Ann are buried in the Birr cemetery. Also a John Alexander (possibly Samuel's little son), Jane (Dann) Weir (who should be Samuel's wife), and a Samuel.

http://ocfa.islandnet.com

There are instructions about how to get more info about burials. If the John is yours there should be death info available.

PB

Edited to add: there seem to be quite a few other family members buried in the Birr cemetery.

Rootsweb has been down for some time, but the index for that cemetery is still available:

http://geneofun.on.ca/cems//ONMID12686?filter=weir

If it gets up and running again, they have photos for these entries.

Found death for John Wear in London Township, Middlesex County, no date given, but registered on February 23, 1883; informant was Dr. Lang.  Cause of death was paralysis (12 months).  These early death certificate hold very little info; doesn't even mention if he was married or where he was born.
