Elizabeth Milne circa 1811
« on: Sunday 04 March 18 18:37 GMT (UK) »
Trying to find marriage + death date of Elizabeth Milne born around 1811 but unknown parents.  She was married to James Smith (1810-1889).  They lived in Craigdam, Tarves in the 1851 census but can find nothing after that for her although James appears in the 1861 census still as same address.  James is a widower when he dies in 1889 at Longside, his daughter Ann is present.  The children were Margaret Smith 1830-1919, Ann Smith 1839 - , Elizabeth Smith 1843 - 1918 and Robert Smith 1846 - .  Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Just adding that James does appear as widowed in the 1861 census. Have you searched on scotlandspeople site for a burial record, or death certificate?

The more information you tell us the more we can help  :)  Have you found any baptisms for the children? Were there any relatives as godparents? What about their marriages? Were there any possible Milne relatives as witnesses? I note there was a Milne family living at Craigdam, have you ruled them out ? If you search on freecen you will see the Tarves censuses. It is useful for seeing who the neighbours are :)

Thanks flst will check out freecen.  On Margarets marriage certificate the witnesses are James Smith and Alexander Smith but nothing on her birth not even mums name only dads.  On Elizabeth's marriage certificate of May 1859 mum is already listed as deceased.  Witnesses were William Penny and George Smith.

If and this could be a big IF, the relatives lived at Craigdam which looks possible then the parents of Elizabeth could be John Milne and Janet Valentine but still checking.  There are a few addresses given as Craigdam in Tarves but they all seem to house a member with surname Milne!

I think I've found James, Elizabeth & family in the 1841 census, in the parish of Tarves, at Braeside of Tolquhon. James is an agricultural labourer. Children are, Margaret, Alexander, Anne, & George.  Maybe the witnesses you mentioned were their brothers.

George is a tailor & appears in 2 freecen censuses. In the first one he is at Craigdam ,& noted as a cousin 's son (of the head of the household)along with an Eliza Milne, also a cousin's daughter!
