John Hennah Nettleton born 1878, can anyone find his death please!
« on: Monday 05 March 18 10:35 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I am related to John Dering Nettleton who won the Victory Cross in 1942 flying a Lancaster Bomber.
I have extensive research about his family but have a couple of missing facts.

His father John Hennah Nettleton was alive in Cape Town in 1942 but I have been unable to get his date of death. I believe it is in the mid 1950s. His wife Ethel lived until 1990 aged 102! The other missing date is for John's sister Iris Ethel Nettleton born 4th Apr 1919, I am unsure if she married or not and cannot establish when she died either.

Thanks in anticipation,

Elaine Dering Gane

Hi,

A possibility for Iris, found at Ancestry,

Iris Ethel
Death Date:  8 Aug 1990
High Court Provincial Division:
Cape Town, The Western Cape, South Africa
Estate Number:  6837/90
Will:  YES
Marital Status:  Single
Customary Law:  NO
Spouse:  Nettleton

It says she is single but gives "spouse name" as NETTLETON, maybe it just means surname :-\

Regards,
Daisy

Hi

Not sure if you have this for John Dering:

Iris' death is pretty recent, I am not sure how long before the file will be transferred to the archives from the High Court.  But you could try ordering the Death Notice directly from the Archives in the Western Cape.  They do their own, not through 3rd parties unfortunately.

archives@pgwc.gov.za -  for general enquiries

records@pgwc.gov.za - for records management enquiries

I have dealt with them in the past and their reply was pretty prompt.  You would have to quote the Estate Number 6837/90 and her name.

good luck

Thanks Sue that is really helpful. I have  distant family I recently tracked down in Cape Town so I will ask them to obtain the details fron within South Africa if possible.
Did you come across the death details for John Hennah Nettleton by any chance? I think 1955 is s possible year of death.

Nothing pops up on our archives for him, but it's possible that he didn't leave an Estate as they are mainly Estate files.

Family Search has his father's Estate with his Death Notice and Will.:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C9BB-P3DQ-2?i=516&cc=2517051
Just click on the arrow to go to the next image.

And I think this is his marriage:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-6Q97-C5M?i=1205&cc=2063749

Family Search has quite a few "Nettleton" records, where I found these, just type in his name and restrict the search to South Africa and quite a few come up. Some may be connected to your side and help you to fill in the blanks.

If they are in Cape Town it may be possible for them to go to the Archives directly to obtain the records and make enquiries.

Hi
I have his birth, marriage and other info including the death of his father Alfred Thomas Dering Nettleton in Cape Town but John's death is the info I am looking for. Thanks to everyone for their help. I'm sure his death entry will  pop up sooner or later. It would probably have made the newspapers in SA due to his VC son!

Keep checking back with Family Search, the database is added to regularly and if he died in the Cape those DN's and Cape Cemetary records are in the process of being transcribed and reviewed at the moment.

Hi

Did JHN serve in WW1 ? There is a medal roll index card with a man by that name. I don't understand military abbreviations, but there does look to be what could be a date on it - 24 . 9 . 55, which corresponds with what you think be the time he passed away.

Maybe something to work with.
