Name of Royal Navy ship please
« on: Monday 05 March 18 15:41 GMT (UK) »
Hugh Young spent most of his life at sea but was in the Machine Gun Corps in WW1.  He lost his army discharge papers and his service records include a request for a duplicate.  I attach part of the letter showing that in 1940 he was an 'engine'  petty officer in H.M.S....
Any views on the name of his ship please?
Ainslie

It looks like Cartrel/Cartral but can't find it listed.

The first letter looks more like a P to me.

possibly "Patrol" - a pathfinder class scout cruiser, but this was paid off and scrapped in the 1920s

If it's the same first letter as the address - is that Cadwyn or similar. I thought it might be most likely a misspelling of Kestrel.

Hmm. I wonder if the engine room crew on Kestrel nicknamed her HMS Castrol.

It's that 3rd letter that's odd - it looks like the other r but nothing like that on the lists that I've looked at.

My cousin was a Capt in the RN but he died 2 years ago. He would have know  :'(
