I wonder if Alice is the Alexina you found in the census as there is this death in Penicuik, Midlothian in 1947

Brand Alexina 88
Reid Alexina 88
Smith Alexina 88

All have the same ref. 697/23.

Think Francis' mother's maiden name was Ward. Possible birth for daughter Margaret in Ireland https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FPYM-TZD (you need to signed in to view).

Well done William! Has to be  :)

We just have the issue of father John's occupation fisherman v shoemaker. Something to bear in mind...many men at this time in these communities were fishermen...and something else to make ends meet. Just odd that shoemaker hasn't shown up anywhere yet in what we have. Maybe that Alice's siblings may also show shoemaker in some registrations?

Great detective work William. Thank you! I have just risked it and brought the record (I don't normally I'm poor  ;D ) But glad I did, it is her mentions her widowed husband my great grandfather a a police constable and he was for the whole of his career.

I'm just trying to get my 5yr old in bed, and I shall be having a good look at the record and then hopefully add the parents and census and hoping to get further. Very strange on the fisherman v shoe maker. :-)

Re Harriet Smith (Thomson) looks like she died in Kirkwall in 1900. The most likely death for John Smith is in Walls RD Orkney in 1874 age 48.

1881 it seems Harriet is living with her father in Walls -father is James Thomson, a crofter born 1797. Likely death for him in Walls in 1888 age 90. Also present is her brother Donald Thomson age 42 - a fisherman and farm labourer.

1891 she is with son James his wife Christina and children in Walls.
