William Stirling
« on: Tuesday 06 March 18 14:03 GMT (UK) »
William Stirling died in Scotland in 1874 aged 89.

In census and Poorlaw records it states he was born in Ireland circa 1785. Parents names are Thomas Stirling and Margaret Jamieson.

I don't know which county or town he hailed from. Can anyone help with his place of birth or place where parents married?

Grateful for any help/suggestions. Thanks.

Jamie

You don't mention his Religious Denomination?

There is this RC baptism?
1785 at Rathfarnham Wm Sterling, son of John Sterling and Ann Flood
Sponsors: Patt Sheridan and Mary Hutton

No other baptisms come up on a search; 1780-1790.

thank you for posting. Unfortunately, we dont know where in Ireland he came from.

I expect William and Margaret Jamieson were married before 1785. I understand marriage records for this period may no longer exist.

I have an Elizabeth Stirling b 1827 in my tree who married one of my Dunsilly, Antrim Millars.

Another tree has her parents as Thomas Stirling and Ann Jane Campbell of Donegore. They married at Donegore Presbyterian Church on 19 May 1826. Thomas was from Ballynoe and Ann from Halftown.

There are several more Stirling marriages in Donegore in the 1820s, incuding a James Stirling of Ballynoe who married an Ellen Jamison of Ballysavage in 1827 and, if the same James, an Eliza Jamison of Browndodd in 1828.

Another two names are William Stirling of Ballynoe who married Margaret Wilson in 1829 and Robert Stirling of Ballynoe who married Margaret harbison in 1839.

Could be worth exploring these families and posting on Antrim site to see if anyone has more information .

On checking further in the tree of a descendant of Elizabeth Stirling, I see that her father Thomas Stirling is listed as one of several children of a William Stirling born c1780. No spouse given.

Robert and William with spouses from previous post are listed as siblings of Thomas. James is also listed but no spouses given.

There is also a brother Hugh and sister Elizabeth.

Also another William Stirling born c1755 listed as father of William born c1780.

Thank you for your posts.

My William Stirling born 1785 was a carter by job. I wonder if any of the Stirlngs's mentioned were carters?

The Ballynoe Stirlings all appear to be farmers judging by the wills in PRONI.

One William Stirling of Ballynoe should have died Dec 1880 according to the probate record but I cannot see the corresponding death registration.  This William's will says he had only one son, also named William and a nephew James Stirling.  Also named are daughters and several grandchildren.
