what does MA stand for under mary ann's occupation, could it be maid?

It doesn't say MA  :) As I said in reply #4, it says Ind. i.e. 'Independant'.

May Ann's 'occupation' is Ind[dependent].

This is usually taken to mean that she was of 'independant means' i.e. had no occupation but was living on some sort of private income.

oh my I think I need better glasses lol thank you I see it now

I found possibly my 4th great uncle and aunt living in Belle Vue House on a cencus in 1841, the uncle's name is Charles Russell and he was a pupil there but his sister Mary Ann was not and I can't decipher what she was doing there as it seems it was a boy's school. Does anyone have any information on Belle Vue House?

Following up information on another of your threads http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=789328.msg6449931#msg6449931 I see that Mary Ann was baptised in North Shields in 1829, which, assuming she was baptised shortly after birth, means that she would be about 12 at the time of the 1841 census.

The Mary Ann in Darlington is aged 15, which means that she could in fact have been anything up to 19 years old (ages for over 15 year olds rounded down to the nearest 5 years in the 1841 census).

I think you might have to consider the possibility that this is not 'your' Mary Ann  :-\

I found the following in an article in The Northern Echo, which may or may not be relevant?

NO 140 Coniscliffe Road was originally a villa known as Belle Vue. Its earliest resident was Cockfield-born John Dixon, who had been George Stephenson’s deputy surveyor on the Stockton and Darlington Railway.

Dixon died in 1865, and Belle Vue was taken over by John Hardcastle Bowman. He had started out as a young man in the leather trade, riding around the North-East with a blunderbuss for protection, selling his wares. His tanning pits were in Archer Street – which is a punny play on his surname.

Bowman, who had lots of business interests, died in Belle Vue in 1898.

The house then became home to Sir Thomas Putnam, chairman of Darlington Forge and a racehorse owner, and he re-named it Greylands.

He died there in 1936, which left the way open for Ropners.

Post-Ropners, 140, Coniscliffe Road, has been the headquarters of Clive Owen and Company, a firm of chartered accountants.

There is also an image of the house in this article :) Further images here http://cliveowen.com/aboutus/ourhistory and here http://dre.durham.gov.uk/pgDre.aspx?ID=DRE8412

I'm fairly convinced this Mary Ann in 1841 is not your relative.

It looks to me like your Mary Ann Russell died aged 1 (unless you have proof to the contrary  :-\ )

Burial at Christ Church Tynemouth, 27th November 1829 , Mary Ann Russell, daughter of William and Mary Russell of Church Stairs. http://www.rootschat.com/links/01lpb/

Also her brother William died a few days later, buried 3rd December 1829.

Oh no, I was afraid of that, because I could not find them anywhere :( I'm pretty sure the charles russell is not the one I'm looking for either, I'll have to check if he passed away as well..and his sister Catherine, she was baptized in durham at the Jesuit church in 1819 and could not find anything on her...thank you so much for all the work you've done on finding this information. I have been trying for months to find anything on them. I really appreciate it!

Was their parent a teacher/ member of staff?

No they were not, they were catholic, so I thought perhaps that this was a Catholic run school?

I think you might be right there.

Take a look at this thread http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=626987.msg4750033#msg4750033

No, I was wrong. The school referred to in the above thread is not the one at Belle Vue. It is on the previous census page, in Paradise Row.
Apologies for misleading you.
