Local People Biographies Files at North Shields Library
« on: Wednesday 07 March 18 12:05 GMT (UK) »
Hi Everyone,

There are shelves of A-Z biographies files in the local studies department at North Shields library.

These are a great resource for anyone who may have local ancestors.

You can find all sorts of items in these such as hand written family trees with notes, newspaper articles, notices, images, and lots more information.  You can also add stuff in these files to help other people who may be researching the same individuals.

That sounds amazing!!  I'm in Ontario Canada, but if anyone local to that area is interested in a trade in overseas help, I'd love to know if there are any biographies on my family in that library!

Hi Shawd,

I don't need a trade (thanks anyway though).. but if you post on who your (North Tyneside) ancestors were I will be happy to have a look for you at some point in the next few weeks when I can next get to that library.  You never know, perhaps some other RootsChatters may also know something about your ancestors if you can give us all some information about them.  (The library holds info on various people who lived around the North Shields/Wallsend/Whitley Bay and Cullercoats areas, if that is of relevance, Shawd.)

Happy New Year from Tyneside!  :)

I might be out of luck - my people are mainly around Morpeth area.  I'm not from there, so I'm not sure how far North Tyneside would be, but I just googled it and it doesn't look like Morpeth in within that area.  :(

For what it's worth, I'm currently researching John Crozier Hawdon and his family.

- John Crozier, born 20 Jun 1807 in Morpeth, Northumberland

Parents are William Hawdon and Ann Crozier (married 13 May 1780).  William was a surgeon.

Siblings are Mary Hawdon (b. 29 May 1799), Thomas Hawdon (b. 25 Mar 1801), Anne Hawdon (b. 1803, died in infancy), William Hawdon (b. 11 Nov 1804), Matthias Hawdon (b. 19 Jun 1809), Robert Hawdon (b. 1 Oct 1811), Anne Hawdon (b. 1813), Elizabeth Hawdon (b. 1817), and Harriett Hawdon (b. 1820).

Some of these siblings became surgeons as well, although John Crozier Hawdon did not - he appears to have been a businessman (warehouseman).  Some evidence that he handled purchasing for a hosiery department.  I have seen some records of bankruptcy and failure tied to his name.  One of his brothers (Matthias) died in Peckham House lunatic asylum and a brother in law (Maurice James O'Connor - married Anne Hawdon) committed suicide by drinking poison.

I'm currently trying to amass as much information about the family as I can - records, articles, correspondence, photos, etc to build out a decent history.

Unfortunately,  North Shields library doesn't hold records for Morpeth.  Although, living in Ontario you wouldn't have known that.

Hopefully, though someone might come along though who might be able to help you out with information about your ancestors.  Good luck with this! :)

It would be more productive if you request something specific. That way we won't search and post information you may already have.

I've done a quick search in the National Archives for William Hawdon in the Northumberland Archives - nothing. I've also done a search for him in the Northumberland newspapers but he is only mentioned as the late father of the John Crozier Hawdon. Is he your focus?

Yes, I've seen that. Much info already obtained.

Did JCH stay in Morpeth all his life or move around?
