I have a feeling that Eleanor LORD was his mother. Married Mitchell STANSFIELD 1915 Oldham.

He died in the war.

She marries again to Christopher HIGO June Qtr 1920 Oldham.

They seem to be at the Lord St address in 1939. (free search so you'd have to check to make certain.)

There's a marriage
June 1920 Oldham 8d 1809
Higo, Christopher
Stansfield, Eleanor

On Lancashire BMD it says that Christopher Higo married Eleanor Lord / Eleanor Stansfield (Oldham Register Office or Registrar Attended)

Are in free index to 1939 Register as Hego?

Thanks Maureen and all my fellow rootschatters. You're the best! The name Mitchell has been carried down to one of the grandsons, we never knew the connection. Well done!
