Hi Stephen Laing.
I suspect that it is a Royal Air Force uniform, he has on his left hand sleeve of his jacket the trade badge of a leading aircraftman.

Dave and Carol are right.  He is also wearing a good conduct stripe which represented 3 years "undiscovered crime" in the 1940s.
