eliza tayor b 1854
« on: Thursday 08 March 18 13:14 GMT (UK) »
good morning.
I have a bit of a mystery I have Eliza Taylor my 2x great grandmother, she was born in  Barton Fields, Gloucestershire according to the censuses. I am struggling to confirm her parents  because I thought they were  Joseph Taylor (labourer)  and Ann Vaile,  Piece 1768 Folio 66 Page number 39 1861 census. I ordered her marriage cert to William jones in 1874 confirm things but the dad says John Taylor and I think it reads Forman at timber merchant. the witnesses are Ellen jones and albert Taylor who I believe are William and Eliza brother and sister. address at marriage is 1 something villa (I think it reads Littleton villa). brook street. joseph and Ann lived 9 brook street. here is the census for 1881 showing Eliza and William Piece 5279 Folio 7 Page number 11 . there is a birth certificate that I can order but if I have the wrong dad this birth to mum vaile would be wrong. Is it possible john and joseph are the same person? would such a mistake be made on the marriage cert? its handwritten
If anyone has any thoughts id be grateful thank you

Certainly not unknown for mistakes to be made on certificates. It could be that although his name was Joseph he was known as John, so that is what Eliza told the vicar when asked for her father's name. Also people often exaggerated occupations as Foreman sounds much better than labourer!

The fact you have her siblings as witnesses and the address is the same makes me think it is the correct person.

According to the GRO

Eliza TAYLOR, registered in 1854, Gloucestershire, mother's maiden name: VAILE

---

Ancestry:

Joseph TAYLOR married Ann VAILE, 9 January 1833

Gloucester St Mary de Lobe,

witnesses: Geo VAILE & Elizabeth VAILE

and looking at the 1861 census, Joseph TAYLOR is aged 51 and a labourer, with wife Ann + Alfred, Eliza, and VAILE relatives in Brook Street.

thank you for both replies
I will go with it then that it is a mistake for the dads name, I don't know why this one has bothered me so much.

On the 1881 census, Glos Barton St Mary
11 Brook Street

Joseph TAYLOR, 72, Dock Labourer, born Stanton, Glos
Ann TAYLOR, 67

next door is a George BROWN, who is a Timber Merchants Clerk

On the 1871 census, he is transcribed as JOSH TAYLOR and again in Brook Street
