try Family Search

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GYBM-SHG?i=21&cc=1727033

That looks quite possible to be William and Jane in 1910?

He says he arrived in the US in 1883 and on that census his occupation was miner.

Interestingly, there is a death index entry in 1883 for a 16 year old Robert Atchison, Brisbane,  Queensland, Australia, index says his parents were William Atchison and Jane Ann Hope. Unlike our BMD indices it doesn't indicate the quarter, just the year. It costs the equivalent of £12 for a scan of the register entry, which seems a lot.

According to the GRO site, there was a Robert Atchison birth registered 1866 Q4, Tynemouth, MMN Hope

1900 US Census on Family Search

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-6QMW-TR?i=20&cc=1325221

Looks like Jane (no idea where William was) and this child , Joseph, who was born in Iowa 1884
<snip wrong url>

Hi Tickettyboo,
Thank you for this additional info. I now have the following unsubstantiated info. from an Ancestry family tree:
William came to USA in 1863 and after short stay returned to England
Went to Australia, lived there over one year before coming to USA
Assistant Superintendent of Carbonado Mines near Oskaloosa Iowa
Elected Mayor and Recorder of MacDonald in West Virginia
Member Knights of Pythias over 30 years.
Any further verification most welcome

I can find the record of them going to Australia, its online
http://www.archivessearch.qld.gov.au/Image/DigitalImageDisplay.aspx?ImageId=38261#page=16&view=Fit&ispdf=true

Scroll down a few pages (its on page 130)

William (43), Jane (38) and Robert (16), the boy whose death registration I found, sailed on the Duke of Buckingham from Portsmouth 20th June 1883 arriving at Cookstown 11th August 1883, it seems to say it was an assisted passage. (my experience of these records is 'very' slim).

Which means that the 1910 US census where it says he went to the US in 1883 is either incorrect ( Jane on the 1900 census says 1884) or they really didn't stay very long at all.

As for the info you have from the Ancestry tree, have you tried contacting the tree owner to ask if they will tell you where they got the information? Are there are sources listed ?

I think you would be better off to ask a moderator to move this thread to the US board for help with their time in the US, its not really (though they originated here) a Northumberland query and you'd get a lot more informed help on the US board. I can firkle round and find bits but people on the US board will have a lot more experience of US records than I do.
