RAF at Church Fenton Yorks
« on: Thursday 08 March 18 17:03 GMT (UK) »
I am researching the housing in my local area. In four of the roads families from RAF Church Fenton were housed. I believe the houses were built around 1957 and demolished at some time in the late 90s or early noughties. The roads were Tedder Rd, Slessor Road, Salmond Rd and Dickson Rd, in Acomb York. I would like to know exact date of building and which squadron was housed there. Also when did they leave, I know after the RAF left some of the houses were sold very cheaply and others were used by the council as local authority housing.
Any information would be great or if anyone out there actually lived on the estate and have any memories even better.
Thanks for reading
Thornwood

Hi Thornwood.
RAF Church Fenton was my first posting in 1980!  It was there long before me and there after I left.  I hope this site helps: http://www.rafchurchfenton.org.uk

Good hunting.

Thanks for that Thudders.  Since posting I have found that the RAF houses were built in 1958 and demolished in 2002.  We have also found a couple of photos. Did you live in the houses at Acomb or do you know anyone who did who may be willing to share a few memories.

Hi again Thornwood.
Sadly, I didn't live in the houses at Acombe.  There is an RAF Church Fenton group on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/327247141969/ (which is a closed group) but if you contact the administrator of that group, you may get some positive replies.

Kind regards,

Hi
I was based at CF between '79 and '82. I lived in in the Airmens block near the tennis court, and was often downdown the Motor Club. I worked on Flight Line and later Rects Hangar as an Engine man. My bosses at the time, Bob Holt, and Cliff Neal both lived in Acomb quarters .. in fact I think I went to Cliffs house once. Cant remember road, or the house. So they were basically Senior NCO's quarters, as some of my mates lived in the quarters NEXT to CF (Cawood Crescent, Dorts and Skelf) Hope a help! Al.

... and yes! Mr Thudnut ... I remember you. We avoided you like the plague!
Remember you shouting at me a few times. Remember the RAFP had an office at back of guardroom? I remember jankers once (I got nicked for having illegal CB radio .. left antenna on roof of car outside block, so was spotted!) Had a girlfriend in Kirkby Wharfe and all our friends were CB'ers when it came out. WE used to buy them in CF from a guy in The Flyer!   BR. Al.
