Liverpool Railways
« on: Thursday 08 March 18 19:06 GMT (UK) »
My ancestor John Reilly b. Liverpool 1858, married Ellen in is listed in the 1891 and 1901 census as Station master and station master railway. Is there a register of railways etc. I would love to know where I could some further info. I have a great picture of him too with a military bearing and huge moustache. Any pointers as ever appreciated.

What's his address on the two censuses? Depending on the location he could well have been living in a tied house, which will give some pointers. I have railwaymen in my family starting off near Huddersfield and then surfacing at Mold Junction.

1881 and 91 he is in West Derby Liverpool, Resident note Paddington, and in 1901 he is in Lorne Street, West Derby still in Liverpool and still a station master. 1911 has him as station master too and living in West Derby Eastern. Obviously a career man, he married in 1879.

Mark

There are some records of Railway employees on Ancestry (just go to card catalogue and type in Railway as a search) -- there are some John Reillys on there -- but not yours judging by his birth year.

Not all Railway companies are included.
There is also this site -- the National Railway Museum;
http://www.nrm.org.uk/researchandarchive/researchhelp/familyhistory

In addition the National Archives seems to have some information
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-research/research-guides/railway-workers/

Looks like hours of fun!!

Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

In 1881 and 1891, his residence is given as Paddington.

I would guess at Edge Hill station?
It's close to Lorne Street and Paddington.

Edge Hill was operated by the Liverpool and Manchester Railway.

It certainly does...Its like a serious drug habit this family history stuff. Every time I decide to put it away I find another little 'trail' to follow. This Railway one for John Reilly looks interesting though. Thanks for the info.

Info on the L&MR:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liverpool_and_Manchester_Railway

There was a Goods Station at Crown Hill also to consider.

In 1846, it was a constituent part of the newly formed London and North Western Railway (LNWR).
It is LNWR records you need to look for.

Thanks. Crown street has long gone, its a nice park now with a huge vent chimney for the railway tunnels underneath. I know Edge Hill station though, going to have a look round this afternoon.

Thanks again.
