1742 Volkszählung, Eisfeld, Thuringia
« on: Saturday 10 March 18 01:36 GMT (UK) »
Greetings,
I hope to get some help with the headings from this census of Eisfeld, Germany. I think it's from 1742. I am interested in Johann Christian Otto (number 3 on the 2nd page). https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS51-2S1N-C?i=182&cat=1335539
Thanks!
Steve

Hintersaßen - Bürger und Witwen in andern Virthel in der Neustadt.

Hintersaßen - residents with partial or no citizenship rights, usually small farmers with a plot of land.
Bürger - full citizen with all rights

Witwen – Widows

in andern Virthel in der Neustadt. - in other quarters in the Neustadt.

Number 3 is: He (Herren) Joh.(ann) Christoph Otto

Thanks again, Dave!
If I could throw another one at you (whenever you get a chance!). Could you give me the gist of this entry for same Joh. Christian Otto? From what I gather, "Mich." is short for Michaelmas. Do I have that right? I see it all over this census.
Anyway, I've attached the full page, and a closeup of the entry concerning our man.

You have been a real help, friend!

Hi Steve

where on earth do you find this headbreakers ???

I can get about 50% of these, but instead of having a sleepless night I´ll post this in a German forum.
Get back to you later
Dave

Dave,
Here is the link to that page within the collection. Maybe it will help to see adjacent pages. Sorry, should have thought of that earlier. You've probably already passed out!

Steve

The excerpts you have are from the Bürgerbuch (Citizens Book), Eisfeld
It was very hard reading. You owe me a bottle of scotch and a pack of aspirin ???

Maybe someone else can do a better translation from German to English.
--------------------------------------------------------
The Citizens Book was a list of residents who had all civil rights.
By paying a „Bürgergeld“ and swearing an oath „Bürgereid“ they were entitled (i.e to vote, to practise a trade or profession)
They also had obligations (i.e.pay taxes, help to guard the town)
You´ll have to put the pieces together yourself.
Does´nt always make sense to me but this is the best i can deliver!

We, (i had help from 2 other people) regard this as a statement of the dues to be paid by the Bürger Johann Christoph Otto, Tanner Walck and Tanner Hans Christof Otto.
