Gwilliam John b. 1800 Goodrich, Hereford - Looking for descendants
« on: Saturday 10 March 18 04:27 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I am researching the family of John Gwilliam and his wife Elizabeth (nee Hawkins) when living in Byford, Hereford, or nearby.   They were married on the 18th August, 1817 at Bosbury, Herefordshire.  It is believed that they had two children, names unknown.
In 1832 John Gwilliam was convicted of Horse Stealing at Cardmanshire, sentenced to death, but commuted to 14 years imprisonment, sent to Australia in 1833 on board the "Camden".

We are keen to know more about his family in Herefordshire before his trial.  Sadly his wife Elizabeth died on the 9th June, 1833, not long after, John was transported to Australia.

Thanking you in anticipation.

There is this from welsh newspapers online

http://www.rootschat.com/links/01lpv/

If this is the right john gwilliam then the horse belonged to a man in Worcestershire but not too far from Bosbury, the marriage place, but the trial was at Carmarthenshire assises, makes me wonder if john gwilliam was a sheep drover,  between Llandovery and worcester / Birmingham.

Incidentally there is an entry on Familysearch submission which has the horse thief as married to Ann and living in byford.

There is a john gwillam born and married in byford but he is still there in the 1841.

Mazi,
Thanks so much for all of this information.  Yes this John Gwilliam was a Farmer in Australia. It is only recently that I have become aware of the possible connection with my family, after having DNA test done, and have a match with descendants of this John Gwilliam b. 1800 at Goodrich.   My line is through a younger brother Thomas Gwilliam b. 1811.    As far as we have been able to determine, these brothers were the issue of William Gwilliam b.1776 at Harewood and his wife Margaret Matthews. They were married at Pencoyd on the 1st September, 1799.   Children were John b. 1800, Mary b. 1803, Thomas b. 1811 (big gap between children) James b. 1814, William 1814, George b. 1817 and Ann b. 1820, all born at Goodrich, except for Ann who was born Hentland (Pentland)

The information on Family Search is interesting, the descendants of John Gwilliam say a different person as their Mother.    So it is a little confusing, have they got the correct information on the parents of John Gwilliam.

If anyone can help me with Parish Records, that could assist greatly.
