Thomas Carey born around 1755
« on: Saturday 10 March 18 11:19 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if anyone can help find a birth for Thomas.

He married Janet Bone, (born 1758), St Quivox, Newton on Ayr, Scotland in 1786 and they had 4 children baptised there. I have all their details.

No record of a birth for Thomas in Scotland so I think he may have been born in Ireland. The name is a bit of a problem, I have seen Carrey, Carry even Currie.

Regards Colin.

I have recently found a Thomas Carrey in Carrickfergus, N Ireland. He witnessed a deed in 1781, and someone of the same name was a freeman of the town in 1803, by virtue of birth there (i.e. must have been at least 21 then?). These may not be the same person of course. There were several men of this surname, involved in transporting coal from Irvine to Carrickfergus at about this time. Perhaps some lived in Ayrshire, others at the other end of the supply line.
I would be glad to know if you are still interested in this family, which I know has many descendants in Scotland - I wonder if Thomas is connected with other possible descendants in Carrickfergus.

Thomas Carey was my wife’s 4X Great Grandfather, as I mentioned in my post he was probably born some time around 1755 and maybe in Ireland.

The marriage record in 1786 states that Thomas (Carry or Carrie) was of the parish of Ayr & Janet of Newton on Ayr was regularly proclaimed.

They had the following children:- baptised St Quivox, Newton on Ayr, Scotland
Ann Carry          4 Nov 1787
Thomas Carry       8 Nov 1789
James Carry          19 Feb 1792
Elizabeth Carry    15 Jul 1794

Thomas 1789 was my wife’s 3X GGF, he was a shoemaker.

Coal was transported from various ports in Ayrshire and mining was carried out to a large extent in the County but I do not know the occupation of Thomas senior.

I would be interested to know if there was a birth record for Thomas in the area of Carrickfergus.

Regards Colin.
