Info of the 1841 census from Freecen

John Linton age 50 Innkeeper born England
Jane Linton (nee Bell] age 40 born Dumfries

Children
John age 20 born England
Elizabeth age 17 born England
James age 15 born England
Frances age  12 born England
George age 10 born Dumfries
Jane age 10 born Dumfries
Janet age 2 born Dumfries

So looks like a second marriage for John with John James Elizabeth and Frances from his first marriage in England

Looking at the gap in children I would say that only Janet aged 2 is the daughter of John LINTON and Jane BELL.  Children George and Jane may be one of each parent.  The original of the census needs to be checked for possible transcription errors in ages.

Looking at the original census is has

children born in Scotland

George and Jane both age 10 possible twins
Janet age 2

All ages are correct from what I can see, and as mentioned earlier it did have Elizabeth and Frances as ticked born in Scotland, but had been scribbled off and written E for England

A possible for the John named in that OPR christening entry.

He had a wife in Mutton Row, Leeds, so he would have been playing away from home if it is him.

Debra, looks like he could well have been  ;) The details on the OPR birth would seem to indicate that he could well be the reputed father of Elizabeth b. 1826 in Eskdalemuir.

John Gillespie's parents Richard and Mary?

If so, John and Elizabeth look to have likely used parents' names for their children. Second born daughter, after Mary, was Ann who also went by the variant of Nancy.

I don't get the above, I have clicked the link but don't see the name Linton, just ones similar?

Also if it is him, then where's my Elizabeth in 1841?

As I can't find any other record to in a census to match her in 1841. x

That Elizabeth maybe under the name Graham the surname of her stepfather Alexander Graham I think the baptisim of Elizabeth to Agnes and the 1841 census Elizabeth are 2 different people

Frances LINTON aged 12 in 1841 appears to have married a Fergus GRAHAM in 1845.  They got around a bit - in 1861 they are in Essex, Frances is aged 36, born Carlisle.  In 1871 they are in Liverpool and she is aged 47, born Carlisle.  In 1881 they are still in Lancashire and she says she is aged 55.

I think she was older than 12 in 1841.
