Yes, they are getting U3A volunteers to do a few parts of the country. Wouldnt be at all surprised to see it pop up on a PTV website soon.

Family history society VOLUNTEERS transcribed loads of stuff only to find it now pay to view, is that moral?

Martin  - I still cannot get Wayback Machine to work even though I've tweaked my antivirus access list. Just keeps timing out. The rest of their website works fine.

For those who want to see what it's all about, the background information on the original site is on The Wayback Machine, but this doesn't archive databases, so you can't do any lookups.

Thank you for this direct link Chris, it sidestepped the timing out problem I had earlier.

The Durham Hearth Tax database is still up there, I'd already downloaded it but if anyone still wants it its at
http://www.hearthtax.org.uk:80/communities/durham/durhamsurnames1666L.pdf

It lists the names and places and whether they were paying or non paying solvents. Unfortunately, it doesn't tell you how many hearths each person had. That would have given me an indication of the wealth or poverty of each name and place.

I imagine you can do the same with the other counties:
Essex
Kent
London and Middlesex
Surrey
Westmorland
Worcestershire
Yorkshire - East Riding
Yorkshire - North Riding
Yorkshire - West Riding

Hopefully, when the site is up again, more info. of genealogical interest will be found.

I was looking for the Durham Hearth Tax returns online and I tried the Wayback machine and the other link posted by Gen Link Lass. Unfortunately the latter returns a 404 error and the former gives the very top of the list only.

Can anyone offer any suggestions or perhaps send me a copy of the PDF?

Eureka! At first I only got the first page on the list but then I clicked a couple of obscure links and got the whole list.

Many thanks

PS this was the link which worked:

I downloaded it as a PDF file, uploaded that to a very good OCR program and converted it to a text file. Then I ran a find and replace on Word to tweak it into an acceptable format, saved the result which I then uploaded to Excel. Bingo! Fully searchable and filterable.
