Albert HOGAN and his Mother Alice in Solihull area ?
« on: Sunday 11 March 18 08:42 GMT (UK) »
Hello, not sure if anyone is able to help but I am searching for a family living in the Birmingham area around 1911, my information is sketchy to say the least.  What I know is that there is a young boy aged about one year old called Albert Hogan and his Mother Alice, maybe living in the Solihull area ?  if any one can help I would be very grateful.  If I find any more I will post it. Many thanks.

Checking the details you gave on FamilySearch, shows the GRO birth registered Q3 1910 in Solihull reg district as well as a death registration 1978 Birmingham.  It does not show a baby Albert Hogan anywhere in England for the 1911 census.

The GRO index should tell you if there is a "mother' s maiden name" shown for the 1910 birth registration.  If there isn't, perhaps Alice was unmarried at the time, didn't complete the census, used a different name entry was badly transcribed, etc.

Ancestry have an image for a family of Hogan containing Alice and Albert living in Yardley - but it is somewhat strange.  :-\
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

There's a GRO death registration in Birmingham for the last named on the census. If the enumerator was removing the children that had died (checking "born" v "died" columns), did he remove the wrong Hogan?

Well spotted, and that would make much more sense - living children at the top of the list, and those who had died at the bottom.

I can't find Alice or Albert in 1911 but in 1901 there is a 13 yr old Alice Gupwell in a Childrens Home in Coleshill. Called Cottage Homes it is described as being "for the children removed by the Birmingham Board of Guardians from their Birmimgham Workhouse"
