"Down Hall", Barton on Humber.
« on: Sunday 11 March 18 12:16 GMT (UK) »
Hello There,

While looking on the British Newspaper Archive, I came across a death notice for my 4x great granddad, John Hunter (1772-1855). He died on the 20th of April 1855. Here is part of the death notice:

"At Down Hall, Barton-on-Humber, on Friday night last, in the 83rd year of his age, John Hunter, Gent..,":

"www.the britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk: Lincolnshire Chronicle - Friday April 27th 1855"

Does anyone please know where in Barton this was? The only "Down Hall" that I have been able to look up, was in Barrow. But that building was not built until around 1877.

Any information would be gratefully accepted.

Thank you very much.

 :) ;)

I wonder have you found him on the census in 1851?

If he has the same address surrounding properties might help narrow down where it was  :)
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

It may be Downholme, Cherry Lane, Barton upon Humber

Info from googling;

Downholme is a vernacular farmhouse; it is thought to be the original Down Hall, the principal residence of one of the Manors of Barrow. The current structure appears as a vernacular farmhouse retaining evidence of a succession of improvements and alterations over the centuries.

Trish :)

Wow!
Thank you very much for all of this information!
So it was Downholme, Cherry Lane Barton on Humber?
I knew that he and his family lived in St. Chad, Barrow, in the 1841 and 1851 Census returns.

Cheers.

Right thank you. I understand now, haha!:

The original "Down Hall", was Downholme in Barrow, "a vernacular Farmhouse" So it was not in Barton. That would make sense because my John Hunter had been a farmer.

And then in 1877, J W Beeton built Down Hall (a three storey house called Down Hall), against the east wall of Downholme.

 :)

This is one of John's son's Edward (Wilson) Hunter from "Freecen".
His address has been transcribed as: "Dason Hall, Barrow". I've not been able to look at the original image on FindMyPast but I'm guessing that it was probably "Down Hall". Edward was born 1809 in Barrow:
