GILFILLAN, VANCE in Momeen, Taughboyne Parish
« on: Saturday 06 August 05 14:41 BST (UK) »
Looking for George Gilfillan, possibly born in Derry, but found on the Griffith's Valuation of 1857 in Momeen, parish of Taughboyne on the Abercorn estate.  He married Sarah Vance also of Momeen.  Her parents are Robert Vance and Mary Allison.

I would like to find George Gilfillan's parents and the births of his children, especially of his son, Alexander.  I believe, but can't prove it, that George Gilfillan is connected with the Ballinamore Gilfillans of Faughanvale, in Derry Co.

There are other Gilfillans in Taughboyne, but I am unsure of their connection.

Any help gratefully appreciated.

Hi,

I do apologise if I've already emailed you about this; I'm beginning to lose track of where I've got to in my list of people to contact.

I'm starting to try to collate some of the Scottish, Irish, American and other overseas Vances in the hope of finally sorting out the connection between them/you and my family of Vans of Barnbarroch. You may be familiar with the work I have already done on the Scottish side of the family which can be found at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~vfarch and with my published paper, "The Origin of the Irish Vances".

I am co-ordinating my work as far as I can with that of the Vance DNA research project - for further details of that, see http://www.vancegenealogy.com/index.php. I would urge any male Vances to take a look at the website and consider having a DNA test done as this seems to be a potentially useful tool in untangling the truth of the matter.

I would also be very grateful if any of you Vance descendants would be prepared to share your data with me, preferably as a gedcom file to save me re-typing it all. I'd be very interested in any info you have about John Vance (who m Mary Allison)

Best wishes,

Jamie Vans of Barnbarroch.

Greetings,

I am quite new to roots chat today upon resuming my ancestry search after 10 years. Any help would be appreciated. I am a Gilfillan and picked up this thread because I believe I have a Robert Gilfillan marrying Mary Vance. Robert's father would be Alexander b. 1813 in Donegal. Does this seem right?

Best-

What year did Robert Gilfillan marry Mary Vance?

There is a marriage of a couple with these names in 1873, his father is George though

Thanks, all, for your contributions........
The father of Sarah Vance who married George Gilfillan was born about 1760 and her brother in 1805. IF the married George in 1873 she was certainly too old to have children with him.
Jamie.
