William Spence and Isabel(la) Hendry
« on: Sunday 11 March 18 13:14 GMT (UK) »
I have been trying to track this couple down but without success, they had a daughter Elizabeth born around 1819.  Elizabeth married in Banff in 1843 but I am unsure if that is where they lived.  On Elizabeth's death certificate in 1886 (died in Peterhead) it states that her parents are both deceased and that William used to be a Ship Master.  Does this ring any bells with anyone else having them in their family trees please?  Thanks.

Hi there  :)

Just adding this link as there is so much background info there which might help now www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=776638.0

Just a thought. As we know, mistakes can creep in to reporting by informants. In Elizabeth's case, we know that it was the Governor of Peterhead Workhouse who reported on her death in later years.

I have found a marriage on FreeReg for a DAVID Spence and an Isabel Henry from 1816 in Banff where Elizabeth was showing to be born c. 1817. www.freereg.org.uk/search_records/5817aa09e93790eb7f5952eb?search_id=5aa58daef4040bf640d5eba0&ucf=false

An Isabella Henry/Spence died in Banff died in Banff at the age of 86 in 1874. Have you tried searching for her in earlier censuses? Might be worth checking those out and also that cert?

The 1851 census has:

Isabel Spence, 61 widow, Clothes Worker At Home b. Banff
Margaret Murray 68 lodger Formerly House Servant  b. Banff

1861 and living by herself:

Isabella Spence 71 retired charwoman b. Banff
Address: 6 Double Dykes, Banff

And final one, if this connects to that 1874 death:

Isabella Spence 84 pauper (I think as mistranscrbed) b. Banff
Address: Duncan Street, Banff

I had actually looked at Isabella Henry/Spence death certificate in the past but discounted it because it said her husband was David and not William but I think I should rethink and maybe see where it takes me if it is David.  I know he was a Ship Master and it says David is a seaman so we are long the same lines, I will see where it takes me, thank you.

That looks promising if David on Isabel's death showed as a seaman. Seaman to ship master allows for creativity  ::) as does an agricultural labourer being quoted as a farmer....

As you say, see where this may take you.
