Edward Hardwick - solicitor
« on: Monday 12 March 18 14:36 GMT (UK) »
I've recently found an article about my 4x Great Grandmother's second husband, Edward Hardwick.
He was born 1826 in Whitkirk, Yorkshire to John and Sarah Ann Hardwick. The family had moved to the Isle of Wight by the 1851 Census and was living in London at 80 St Martin's Lane at some point before emigrating to the Colony of Victoria on the 'Hopewell' in Oct 1852 (arriving Feb 1853).

It states that he was "one of the attorneys of Her majesty's Court of Queen's Bench at Westminster and a solicitor of the High Court of Chancery" when he was applying to the Supreme Court of the Colony of Victoria in 1854.

Can someone help point me in the right direction to look for records relating to his time as an attorney/solicitor in London?

Thanks!

- Wheatley (London, England)
- Gallagher (County Donegal, Ireland)
- Lambert (County Limerick, Ireland)
- Casbolt (Cambridgeshire, England)
- Slavin (County Armagh, Ireland)
- McBride (County Armagh, Ireland)

One starting point will be the Law List, published annually. There's a complete run in the National Archives' library at Kew and a near-complete one at the Society of Genealogists; might be others around.
Try searching the London Gazette - sometimes this brings up a rich haul of material, sometimes nothing, and the indexing isn't perfect.
Try searching the British Newspaper Archive.
