Now I am confused as the Joseph I got in reply 4 (having abandoned the previous family I was following!) says he was a widower ......... suggesting Mary had died by then.

(and I thought that find looked good, as Joseph father according to marriage cert to Mary ,was also a Joseph, and I found that 1851 just before the marriage confirming a father as Joseph....)

I am confused too,  but I do think that Joseph the widower is the right person and that it is likely Mary left him and took Louisa to live with Peter.
