Margaret Adam. Where is her DC or in 1881 if alive?
« on: Monday 12 March 18 21:50 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone,

This post may cross over into Angus, but the last known location I have for this lady is Drumnagair, Marykirk.

Margaret Adam is my 3x great-grandmother. She was born circa 1802 in Lintrathen, Angus.

She married a man with the same surname as herself, which makes things more difficult in pinning down her DC on SP.

She married John Adam (1797 - 1873) in Lintrathen in 1822. Her husband John Adam dies in 1873 at Drumnagair, Marykirk. The informant is their son George Adam. Margaret is not noted down as being deceased on his DC so she is probably still alive post 1873.

John Adam and Margaret Adam had the following children;

James b.1823
John b.1825
Jean b.1828
William b.1831   (2x great-grandfather)
Janet b.1832
Betty b.1834
George b.1843

All born Lintrathen, Angus.

I have them at the following locations in various censuses;

1841

Newbigging, Lintrathen

John Adam, 44, Farmer
Margaret Adam, 37

1851

East Muirhead, Kirriemuir

John, 55
Margaret, 48

1861

She isn't with her husband here, so I am unsure if this is her at present but it's the most likely fit.

Wetreesk (Wet Reisk), Lintrathen

Head of the house; Thomas Lamond, 42

Margaret Adam is 58 here and she is noted as being the Aunt of Thomas Lamond.

1871

Drumnagair, Marykirk, Kincardineshire

She is here with her husband John. He dies 2 years later at Drumnagair.

I can't find her after John dies. If someone could help me pin down her death I'd be very grateful. Would like confirmation on her parent's names.

Many thanks.

Hi Liv

What were the names of John Adam's parents? Might help others when searching for clues on Margaret.

Hi Liv

Monica  :)

John Adam's parents were; William Adam and Margaret Lindsay.

William Adam dies in 1799 at Bottom, Lintrathen. Margaret Lindsay is named as executor here. Have no further details on the parents, but they were probably born Lintrathen. At least William, the Adam surname was quite prevalent in that area going back to the 1600s.

Liv. :)

The children I have of William Adam and Margaret Lindsay are;

James b.1792 Lintrathen  He marries; Janet Ogilvy
Jean b.1793 Lintrathen
John b.1797 Lintrathen
Helen b.1798 Lintrathen

Nothing obvious for Margaret's death is there  :-\

If Thomas Lamond, from 1861, was a nephew, mother a sister to Margaret (maybe though, could have been the connection was through husband John Adam).

Thanks for checking Monica. I'm sure she'll turn up somewhere, I'll keep looking and checking out the Lamond connection.

Thanks again.

This could be her death:

Margaret Adam, 83, widow of John Adam, farmer, died 17/7/1885 Fordoun, Kincardineshire - informant son William Adam.   Her parents are given as John Adam, farmer (dec'd) and Betsy Chaplin (deceased).

I note from the census that Margaret is said to have been born Lintrathen ca.1803.

A John Adam married Betty Chepland 17/7/1801 Lintrathen - a daughter Margaret bp.10/6/1802 Lintrathen.

Can't find her in 1881 however.

Hi Annette,

Thank you for finding this. I have downloaded the DC from SP that you mention and I believe this is the correct Margaret Adam. Her son William Adam, the informant, was living at Fisherford, Fordoun in 1881 and Margaret was living at Bogburn, Fordoun when she did in 1885.

This is her. Thank you so much Annette for finding this. I'll see if I can find her in 1881, which seems to be an on-going task.

Liv.

Uhhh found out something quite interesting about one of Margaret's siblings.

I have been doing some googling of Margaret's parents names, John Adam and Betty/Betsy Chaplin/Chepland and found a book called "The Mulbuie Murderer" written by Graham Clark in 2013.
There were some free previews available of the start of the book (which is where his parents names were mentioned and where google took me too) and I skimmed through them. It appears that Margaret Adam's brother, John Adam b.1804 was hung for murder in Inverness in 1835. He killed his wife, Jane/Jean Brechin! Also, his death mask is available to view at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh!

The free previews definitely confirm him to Margaret Adam's brother. It goes into the family history and his childhood. The free previews also go into his life, and how he ended up living on the Black Isle.

Certainly did not expect to find this!

I will definitely be purchasing this book, and I'd also like to get in contact with Graham Clark as well. Does anyone know how I would go about doing this.
