hi thank you,,,    he was my ggg grandfather,  his name was Thomas smallwood , the crime was in 1834, Nottingham , i found this on ancestry,
he was about 18 yrs old.
he is in the census 1841 married to Ada smallwood. his age should be 25,  in the 1851 his correct age was 35.

Hi,

There is a newspaper article but the sentence is 8 months (therefore perhaps not your Thomas) -

Nottingham Review and General Advertiser for the Midland Counties 03 January 1834

George Nix and Thomas Smallwood, both 18, on 13th December stole 14 pies from the shop of Mary Wainwright in Goose Gate. Nix - 4 months, Smallwood having been convicted before received 8 months imprisonment.

Thomas Smallwood (17) stole a pair of shoes, property of John Idwell sentenced to 3 months imprisonment.

hi thank you, this could be right as he was sentenced twice , it shows on ancestry in the criminal records book, but its not clear so sentencing is hard to read, very grateful for your help, must have been suffering from hunger , and no shoes, terrible times ,

The record does state larceny, before convicted of a felony. I think you have the correct chap, J Jen - his age is gven as 18 while the sentence looks like 8 months to me (it is rather faint). He was tried at the Epiphany Sessions which ties up with the date of the newspaper.
