Re: Addresses on Death Certificate.

Just another query - when I was entering the information in my family tree there was  something odd about the death was registered.

Thomas Parking died 21st Sept 1855.
The date when the death was registered was 23rd NOVEMBER 1855. 2 months after his death.

Does anyone know why that would be? I thought deaths were supposed to be registered within days of a person dying and they weren't buried without them being registered.

That could account for address being different to what I thought it should be. She may have moved in the meantime.

Any ideas on that please.

There may have been an inquest. Section XXVII of the 1836 registration Act "Provided always, that the Coroner, upon holding any Inquest, may order the Body to be Buried, if he shall think fit, before Registry of the Death,"

However in the 19th century inquests were usually held within days of the death.

Even if an inquest was held within a few days of death, a certificate may not have been issued until some weeks later. I have an ancestor found dead Sunday 4th February, inquest held Monday 5th February, buried Wednesday 7th February & death certificate dated 16th March

The 1836 Act says "Provided always, that in every Case in which an Inquest shall be held on any dead Body the Jury shall inquire of the particulars herein required to be registered concerning the Death, and the Coroner shall inform the Registrar of the Finding of the Jury, and the registrar shall make the Entry accordingly."

So it is up to the Coroner to inform the Registrar, and the Registrar to register the death, and if they were dilatory in doing this it could account for the delay.

Thank you for all the information.

I have looked at the death certificate again and the cause of death was 'Cholera' - then it says 'not certified'. Don't know what that means.

Then the Informant was Isabella Parkin - his wife.

I have had other death certificates where there has been a Coroners Inquest but the Informant on the death Certificate has always been the Coroner himself.

However I think it likely that there was an inquest and that is probably the likely reason why the death certificate was dated so long after the death.

Thanks you for all your replies.

Judy

It means death had been not been by a medical practitioner. It looks as though there had not been an inquest, as the informant would have been the coroner.

Thanks Stan.
Now I am still left wondering about why the date of death was Registered so long after Thomas dying.
