Yes,that's the one I think as well,keyboard.

I think Sam*s father was Weston Shep*rd. They seem to be found in the 1841 census. I was wondering if there was a James in the family but it doesn't look like it.

Oh well,worth a try!

Thanks so much for this - you are being very generous with your time and effort on my behalf!  I need to get myself together and do some searching using your clues, but this does seem a useful lead.  My mother would hardly ever speak of her parents on either side, so we gathered there was some family constraints in there.
