You might like to make a note of this maritime online database of the merchant navy, which is in the process of publishing crew list names.

Update: I have now found on the Wills site that when Ann Henning (wife of Charles) died in 1880 administration of her personal estate was granted to her sister, as William Robert son and only next of kin was under age. The following year 1881 administration was granted to William Robert as he had now come of age. Ann is described as a widow. How likely is it now that Charles had deserted her? or is it more likely he had passed away?

I have already investigated and discounted the New York one, wife and daughters were born in Germany and the ages would count aginst it being my Charles.

Are we looking at the same record?  In 1870 the daughters are Caroline 6 and Ann 4, both born New York, and in 1880 the only daughters is Annie aged 15.  The first child is therefore born c1864, so well within the timescale for Charles to have left England & settled in the US.  His Naturalisation is dated 5 Oct 1868.

I understand the naturalisation process took 5 years meaning the earliest he could have arrived in the US would have been October 1863, and as he was on the 1861 UK census that will restrict a passenger list search to just over a 2 year period. Is there anywhere I can find out more about the naturalisation record? Are the declaration of intent records available?
