Uniform Identification pls
« on: Tuesday 13 March 18 20:21 GMT (UK) »
The photo is my grandfathers (Ghulam Mustfa) during WW2. He was in Royal Indian Army Service Corp (RIASC). As I know this picture was taken around 1942 either in Italy or Egypt (when he was promoted as Non Commissioned Officer (Jemedar-the officer rank given to Indians). Please identify his uniform color as well as the colors on his medal band. With the other medals he was awarded Italy star too. His medals picture is also attached.

I googled but couldn't find exact dress & its color. More that I wanted to know the cap & other ornament of such rank so that I properly color it.

I can't find a colour image of an RIASC officer, but the attached image of a Canadian (RCASC) uniform looks to be consistent with the shading in your picture.  The shirt in your picture will be the same colour as the jacket, the tie should be a very similar colour to the jacket lining

Hope this helps.

I think the photo must be later than 1942.

The medal ribbons in your grandfather's picture look to be the India General Service Medal, the 1939-1943 Star (later the 1939-1945 Star) and the Italy Star (which I believe was issued in 1945).  This would suggest that the photo was taken in 1945 or 1946 before the Defence Medal and the 1939-1945 War Medal arrived.  The medal with the ribbon of charcoal with a narrow white band is the Pakistan Independence Medal issued in 1948.

Thank you so much sir. My grandfather was living in Rawalpindi, the biggest cant of the Indian British army. The capital of Pakistan; Islamabad is new to it. He died in 1984 when I was in school. He used to listen Radio and read newspaper and help us in our homework. He praise the British strategies but love native traditions. My father was his only son.
I will soon upload his other pictures as well, after retirement.
