William & Rachel Slew Mystery
« on: Tuesday 13 March 18 22:43 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for any help/information on the above William & Rachel.

My 3x Great Grandmother was a lady called Ann Kitto ms Slew, she was born 4th August 1805 and baptised 9th March 1806 in St George the Martyr, Southwark to William & Rachel Slew.

I have also found two other children to William & Rachel - Mary Ann born May 1803 (Southwark) and Esther born September 1811 (Southwark).

I cannot find a marriage for William or Rachel, nor a potential birth or death for them.

It's very frustrating, I feel like I need to know who they were, but I'm not sure if this is a brick wall I have hit.

If anyone Can help I would be very grateful.

Keelan

Hi Maggsie,

I did find that marriage between Mary Ann & James Kates, but it turned out to be a different Mary Ann, I can't remember why though so will revisit that in my Tree.

Also, as all three girls (Mary Ann, Ann, & Esther) were baptised at St George the Martyr, in Southwark, do you think that would have any sort of connection to where William Slew was from? By that I mean which out of the 4 you have found for him, is closest to St George the Martyr?

William and Rachel also had a son Thomas who was buried at St. George's Southwark 27 December 1800.

Hi,
You said.......

I wouldn't know, sorry.

My Great Grandfather in law, I was told...... had a broad Irish accent, lived in King Street South in Dublin, all documents say born in Dublin. When I went searching....no he wasn't, he was born in Scotland and his family moved to Dublin when he was 4. His mother was from Templemore in County Derry, his father was from Essex, he was a Mariner.
As you can see it's difficult without proof.

I just wonder why there is no paper trail for William & Rachel, Rachel especially.

I just wonder why there is no paper trail for William & Rachel, Rachel especially.

Could be many reasons for this. Missing or destroyed records, they may not have married, they married elsewhere, non conformist, surname variations ....and remember that many ordinary people left no paper trail. Many early baptismal records just gave the father's name "x son or daughter of X" with no mention of a mother so I am not surprised there is no documentation for Rachel.

The surname is unusual with not enough instances of it for it to be included in the Surname Profiler, though there are a few with that surname in the census.

Did they live long enough to appear on any census?

Have you followed their children's lives in case you find clues there of extended family, aunts, uncles, cousins, which may lead you to possible William Slews?

Some lists of parishes which may help or hinder:

London Parishes:
https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/London_Parishes

Middlesex Parishes:
https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Middlesex_Parishes

Surrey Parishes:
https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Surrey_Parishes

Unless you have some proof that William is from a certain area and born in a certain year it is difficult to know if you have found the correct birth/baptism.  :-\

If you know when they died, have you checked for wills for William/Rachel?  :-\
