Jane Keene's daughter Elizabeth
« on: Wednesday 14 March 18 00:07 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone confirm the surnames of the daughter named in this Will of Jane Keene of Minety.

The daughter's name is Elizabeth and her surname looks like Tollin, Tellin or Tillen.

Thanks

Matt

Tellen seems the most likely spelling.

I'd say 'Tellen'.
It certainly looks like 'Tellen' in the line below, that gives a bequest to Elizabeth's daughter Mary.
Definitely an 'e' at the end, and the 'e' after the capital 'T' looks very much like the 'e' in 'death' in the line above.

Hi

Thanks to sbny357 and goldie61 for confirming the surname as "Tellen". After I posted the image I had a closer look at the name and did a few searches online and that was an option I came up with.

There is a christening in Minety in 1671 for a Mary Tellen daughter of Henry Tellen. Four years later there is a christening in Minety for a John Tellen son of Henry and Elizabeth. Although I can't find a marriage for Henry and Elizabeth yet I think it is likely that this is Jane's daughter.

Finally worked out that the name is Tellin.

Found on The Genealogist the following marriage :

Henry Tellin and Elizabeth Keene
29 January 1671 Minety, Wiltshire.

It might be transcribed (or even written) in that new record you have found as 'Tellin' Matt, but you would still need to keep an open mind as to other spellings - as we have seen, it was spelt 'Tellen' in the other actual document you posted.
Different scribes will have spelt it different ways. There would be no definitive spelling of the word.
All makes for interesting research! ;)

Yes that's true. It could be spelt Tellin, Tellen, Tellon, Tillen, and at one point I thought it was Tollen.

Henry's not my ancestor so I don't need to worry too much about him.

The one thing I might try to do is see if there is a Will for him or Elizabeth as these might give me more details about the Keenes.
