John DALVEEN
« on: Wednesday 14 March 18 08:40 GMT (UK) »
Dear Roots Chatters,

John Dalveen was born about 1829 in Ireland.  The Dalveen family moved to Girvan Scotland shortly thereafter.  John died in Geelong Hospital, Victoria in 1866, age 36.  He was a soldier.  His death certificate reads that he was 3 years in Victoria from Sydney.

Dalveen is also sometimes spelt Delveen, Develin, Davlin, Develin and Davelling.  Your wonderful colleagues on the Ayrshire board have provided me with the details of his siblings and Scottish census information.

I would like to find out more about John’s military career please and when and where he arrived in Australia.  Or, if you could point me in the right direction, that would be great.  I don’t need any other family information thank you.

Erin Mary Ryan.

Hi Erin,
I'm afraid that I'm not finding anything useful  :(

I have searched for a will in Victoria on https://www.prov.vic.gov.au/
I have searched for a will or probate in NSW at https://www.records.nsw.gov.au/
I have done a keyname search in NSW at https://www.records.nsw.gov.au/keyname
(can use wildcards so searched for d%lveen) in the hope of finding immigration or deceased estate or other information
I have searched for a death notice or obit or mention on newspapers at  https://trove.nla.gov.au/

Just thought I'd let you know that we have been trying but not finding anything.   ( And this will bump your query up to the top of the page again to inspire others to look  :) )

" He was a soldier.  His death certificate reads that he was 3 years in Victoria from Sydney."

Do you mean that he was a soldier at the time of his death, 1866 (so likely a soldier earlier in NSW?).  Or do you know he was a soldier during his life.  Where was he a soldier.  The information about years in the colony is not worded as I am used to seeing on a certificate.

Can you scan the death certificate and place it here please.

Buried at Geelong Eastern Cemetery - grave location unknown.  It is possible he was buried in a public grave.

I note that you are really only concerned with the arrival of John Dalveen c 1860-63 but I wondered if you had considered other members of this family. There is a Thomas Dalveen b 1834 of Carngham who married 1860 Bridget O'Meara and in Trove a Hugh Dalveen of the same place who married Anne u/k.
Perhaps you may have more luck in tracing the other Dalveens?
There is a court case with Thomas v Hugh so am thinking brothers?
And a birth for John Macdonald DALVEEN to Thomas and Bridget 1867.. named after John dec'd 1866?
