Where is Colane
« on: Wednesday 14 March 18 09:56 GMT (UK) »
I have a birth record for an ancestor, registered in Aghalee.  The address on her birth record is 'Cole Lane', which I have just discovered is Colane, but the person who signed her registrationwas Ellen McAllister, inmate.  I see there is a Colane Road running south of Aghagallon.  Was that where the Lurgan workhouse was?

Lurgan Workhouse was to the South-West of Lurgan.
In 1929, the workhouse became Lurgan and Portadown District Hospital, later Lurgan Hospital.

P.S. Lurgan is in Co. Armagh ;D

Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

Aghagallon is within the boundary of the Poor Law Union of Lurgan, as is the Parish of Shankill,

I have found Colane road on my Ordnance Survey map ,so I am searching that area forMargaret Craney, mother of Eliza Jane walker, born 1865, in Cole Lane and baptised in Kilmore Catholic Church in Co. Down.

For reference, here's the birth registration which clearly shows the address as Cole Lane-
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1865/03566/2313705.pdf

I can't see a suitable townland for 'Colane' but road names are a recent thing in the area so may be a red herring. Also possible it's a local name but not a townland.
This map shows the area-

still typing...
