Mr. DUNN of Liverpool

Trying to help put together a history of my cousin-in-law's father's history but keep getting in knots - any help or knowledge of this man most welcome.

My c-in-l says his father was called "Gerry" and died in 1996 (he attended the funeral at one of the Catholic burial grounds but doesn't recall which).

The only death that matched was for a John Joseph DUNN, aged 81 (born 28 May 1915) death Oct 1996 Knowsley.

I sent for the 1960 marriage (licence) certificate of my c-in-l mother (both on their second marriage by now) and on the certificate his father is listed as John Joseph Gerald DUNN (age 44)  but his signature is J. J. Dunn. He was living at 15 Clarence Street L3 - his father Charles DUNN, a deceased bookmaker.

I was able to find a birth certificate for John DUNN born 28 May 1915 at 61 Gill Street, Liverpool (father Charles DUNN a bookmaker's clerk and mother Sarah nee Leader)

Now I'm struggling to find previous marriages for Mr Dunn, was he plain John or John Joseph or did he use the alias John Joseph Gerald DUNN, I'm a bit stumped as to know which way to go without spending a fortune on the wrong certificates.

Has your cousin in law not got his own birth certificate? That would show his father's name.

Also have a look at the 1939 National Identity Register for possible correct men. You could start with the possible date of birth you have.

The linchpin to all this has been his grandmother Sarah Ann McDonough (who he lived with, with his mother from an early age - father not allowed on the scene!)

Has your cousin in law not got his own birth certificate? That would show his father's name.

I don't think he has his own original b.c. as he is no longer a Dunn!
