James Cripps
« on: Wednesday 14 March 18 13:51 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to trace beyond my 2 x g grandfather James Cripps. According to his attestation papers when he joined the 4th Hussars in 1861 and the subsequent UK census returns for 1881/91/01 he was born about 1843 in Carlow to James Cripps and unknown mother.

He married Sarah Jane O'Toole in 1872 in Meerut, India. She was born in 1856 in Dublin to Felix O'Toole and Margaret Kelly.

He died in 1905 in Battersea, London. She died in 1934 in London.

I have searched the parish records for Carlow but to no avail (some of them are in a pretty bad state). I haven't even been able to find any records for siblings that might have helped. I don't have a great deal of experience of researching Irish genealogy and as I understand it, it can be quite a different prospect to the British side of things.

Any help or ideas about either James or Sarah would be extremely appreciated.

Thanks

Philippe

Yes, we give a lot away for free!

There is a James/Bridgit in Carlow but they are Church of Ireland, no son James!
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

Griffith's Valuation has two results for James Cripps in Carlow, (print date 1852) likely both are the same person, in the townland of Rathnapish.
http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=nameSearch
Rathnapish is in the Civil Parish and RC Parish of Carlow, which you have already searched.
Are you sure they were RC?

Might be worth trying the name on Irish Genealogy civil and church (COI for Carlow) records.

Have done, none with a son James.

Thanks for the link to the Griffith Valuations. Sarah Jane O'Toole was baptised at St James' Catholic Church in Dublin, so assumed (rightly or wrongly), that she would have most likely married a catholic, even though she was in India.

You will be relying on Church records as Parent's Marriage and his Birth are before start of Civil Registration.

Its a civil record from 1860 - which suggests its not catholic

They have a number of children - Hannah, Thomas, James, William, Robert

George was a Saddler and seems to live in Tullow Street, Carlow, as per the childrens births certs

His wife Theresa Died in 1883, aged 42.

Not sure if these are connected but they are the only family of Cripps I can find in Carlow!

There is a tree on ancestry that shows Georges son James marrying a Martha O'Connor and living in Dublin -
I am found them on the 1911 census for you

The only other Cripps born in carlow in either census is George Cripps (Aged 49 in 1911)
