Rev. W. Potter of Tunbridge Wells
« on: Wednesday 14 March 18 14:27 GMT (UK) »
I am not a subscriber to any geneology sites and so would appreciate some assistance.

I have a postcard view of the Primitive Methodist Church on Camden Road Tunbridge Wells on which is a photo of Rev. W. Potter. I know he was a Primitive Methodist Preacher.

I believe he was living in Withesham in the 1860's and 1870's but I have a record of his name only at the Camden Road Church in Tunbridge Wells in 1907 and 1909.

I found a marriage record for a Rev. W. Potter at Chichester, given as the Rector of Withesham,Suffolk, to Harriet, the eldest daughter of W.C. Newland, esq of Chichester but I don't know the date of the marriage or any other details of the marriage.

Any family information for him would be appreciated (birth, marriage death, census etc)

The Suffolk placename is Witnesham, rather than Withesham, just for info.

Are you familiar with Familysearch? You can get free (transcribed) census info there.

The 1881 census shows William Potter as Rector in Church Lane, Witnesham (76 b Prestwich, Lancs) with wife Harriet (77 b Chichester).

Thank you for your replies.

I am confused as there seems to be two conflicting records. The 1881 census gives William born 1805 Prestwick, Lanc with  wife Harriet born 1806 Chichester and yet one of you gave him as a Primitive Methodist Minister born 1873 with a wife Annie. Was one the son of the other and if so which one was the minister at the Camden Road Church?

They are two different people, there is no connection, just coincidentally the same name .
The William Potter of Tunbridge Wells was a Primitive Methodist Minister i.e.non-conformist, and was born in 1873, Carlisle, Cumberland. The Rev. Canon William Potter, was made Rector of Witnesham in 1836, and he was Church of England.

Thanks for the clarification.

In that case I have all the information I need. I found the William Potter born 1873 in an article about the Methodists and it filled in the blanks along with what I was able to find on the familysearch website.

So thank you both for your time and effort in responding to my inquiry.
