Probate Entry
« on: Wednesday 14 March 18 16:24 GMT (UK) »
I found a probate entry from 1960 and couldn't believe what I was seeing.
In 1960 my parents were outdoors admiring a new car when a brush came through their neighbours window, dad broke in and found their neighbour on the rug in front of the fire. He was having a kip when a coal rolled out and set him on fire, all that was left of his clothing was the zip and studs of his jeans. He was fully conscious and told dad to take a big jar of coppers and other monies for safe keeping.
He died later in hospital and the police came to collect the money.
The probate says he was last seen alive on February 27 1960 and who's dead body was found on February 28. If that was true the registration district would be different.
Also he left over £1000 and administration was to HM Treasury Solicitor. He had a sister and many relatives, some are still alive today but this suggests his money went to the state.
Just goes to show you can't believe everything you read.

Do you have a copy of the probate or are you giving information from the index.

There's no Registration District mentioned on the Probate Calender?
It does mention the Probate office where the hearing took place ;D

It sound a like a completely different set of circumstances from the case that you describe - someone who was found dead, not found fully conscious. Are you sure it's the same person?

It is the entry in the probate index but it is our neighbour as the address is given, administration was granted at London but our local probate office would be Leeds

When I found this, I read it out to my parents who were astonished as  he was alive and fully aware of what had happened

It only means the Treasury Solicitor was dealing with  the estate, not that the estate had gone to the Government. It may be that none of the family applied for the administration.

Probate or Administration is done at the nearest office to the person dealing with it, not where the deceased lived.

The information about the death would have come from the death certificate.

Hi

Why have you posted this?

Do you need help? As the gentleman died "57" years ago, you can post his details.

Regards
