Thank you Jomot, this is the theory I am working on. My Joseph owned a farm called Withens on Cold Edge. His son John inherited the farm and I have found a document that say he (John) registered it and he was Josephs youngest son but can't find his actual will. I think John had a brother and sister called Benjamin and Mary, as they seemed to have signed each others marriage registers. I thought he may be the Joseph who married Hannah Midgley but wanted more evidence. I knew about the Tathams of Castle Carr but not been able to link them up. Thank you so much for that it is very helpful.

Hello Maggie

There are Tatham search returns in the Leeds University Special Collections Quaker collection
https://library.leeds.ac.uk/special-collections/collection/718

225 Quaker Tatham returns, quite a few Tatham surname ...
https://explore.library.leeds.ac.uk/special-collections-explore/Quaker%20Collection?searchColumn=archiveKeyWord&query=Tatham&browseQuery=Search&selection=Quaker+Collection&archiveLevel=All

Two Jos Tatham - Brighouse MM (Monthly Meeting) held at Bedfordshire Archives
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/results/r?_ep=Jos%20Tatham&_dss=range&_sd=1750&_ed=1800&_ro=any&_st=adv

See who the two Assignees were?

I know Quakers didn't like Bankruptcy and avoided it.

It might be (or might not be), that one, or both the Assignees were Quaker/s, helping out a fellow Member, or Meeting Attender, or even a Quaker relative?

Mark

Thanks Mark,
I have looked at Tathams in the past who were Quakers but not been able to link them up, so thanks for this suggestion. All John's children were baptised at Mount Zion Methodist chapel but could easily have had Quaker relatives or contacts. I will check out the assignees and the Quaker links.
I have had so many helpful suggestions from this post. Thank you all,
Maggie
