I was worried about that neck ware and just found a bow tie and collar, dated 1870s.The silk braiding lasted well into the 1880s though.

do you think he looks mid 20's or a bit older perhaps? I'm rubbish at ages  ::)

I initially thought mid to late 20s, which made me think 1880s but,  if born in 1856 and Jim's date is correct, he must have/started to lose his hair early. If my arithmetic is correct, he'd only be 24 in 1880.

I've just noticed that the jacket doesn't button up as high as many of the 1870s jackets of this style did.   Am not sure of the late 1870s date that Jim has given.

So perhaps this pushes the date to between 1885-1889 & means he held onto his hair for a few more years  ;)
