email taking up memory on tablets

Do the emails I have on my tablet take up memory space.I can  view them while not connected to wifi so are they stored some where ?

 The thing that puzzles me is that inbox emails open offline,  but what is left in the trash box only show online.
presumably those are not stored in the android memory.
I'm trying to clear as much as I can, but as you can see am not very technical minded.
